Window of few opportunities

by Zesh Rehman , 07 January 2009

My experiences of the transfer window have been good and bad. At times it can be frustrating being restricted to a small window as there may be a club that needs your services right away but it does not happen as the rules do not allow it.

I have managed to get the permanent move that I needed when I moved to QPR from Fulham a few years ago.

I have also had a few loan spells during and after the window - once to Norwich and once to Brighton.

However at Blackpool, during a spell when I was not playing, I could not move to another club that were ready to play me. This can result in the club moving on to another target when the window eventually opens.

On the flip side of it, I got my opportunity at Fulham as a youngster during a time when the club was hit my injuries and could not bring in another senior player to cover due to the window being closed, so the club gave a player from the youth ranks a chance and I went on to play 30 times for the first team.

I am back at QPR now but there's a lot going on at my former club Blackpool.

I don't think Simon Grayson was wrong to join Leeds, he did a fantastic job at Blackpool in securing promotion from League One and maintaining the club in the Championship on a limited budget so he deserves his opportunity.

I was a little surprised to see him drop down from the Championship to League One, however Leeds is a massive club with a Premier League set-up who have ambitions of getting back to that level, so good luck to him in the challenge of trying to achieve that.

If Blackpool feel the manager has breached his contract then they are within their rights to take legal action and it's not up to me to say whether it's right or wrong. At the end of the day, football is a business and every chairman wants the best for his club.

I' m not sure who will get the job but I have seen all the speculation in the papers linking various people with the post. One name that stuck out for me was John Hughes at Falkirk. He's done an outstanding job over six years there. With a growing band of Scottish managers south of the border it would not surprise me if Blackpool were to appoint him.

Owen Coyle at Burnley was not known by many people before he came from the Scottish First Division and look at the excellent job he has done. It would also make sense to keep Tony Parkes in charge on a short-term basis to stop any paper talk affecting the dressing room.

My loan spell at Blackpool was disappointing as I was told I would play regular first-team football by the manager when I signed, but for whatever reason it did not happen.

I am back at QPR now and since returning have had the opportunity to speak to the manager Paulo Sousa. He told me that as far as he is concerned it's a clean slate and a fresh start. He lets you know where you stand and what the situation is and as a footballer that is all you can ask for.

I have never lost faith in my ability and I believe I am good enough to play in the current QPR team, however with my contract running out at the end of the season I need to show the manager what I'm capable of.

In the summer I will have a decision to make, all I want to do is play football and if it's here with QPR then great.
