Sunderland are better than that

by Craig Burley , 08 December 2008

I was disappointed with Sunderland against Manchester United on Saturday.

The bottom line of it is that they didn’t get out of their own half. People at home and the people that go to the game pay their money to be entertained and I’m no different.

I like to watch an entertaining and open game of football and I think Sunderland just got themselves into the wrong mindset. They got bogged down in the first half in a mindset of containment and they just couldn’t get out of that.

As I said in the commentary, that was the really frustrating thing for me because they are better than that. They’ve got some decent players like Djibril Cisse, Kenwyne Jones and Andy Reid but just didn’t show it.

I understand that you have to play more defensively when you go to places like Old Trafford but that’s not the same as keeping most of your players in your own penalty area.

There was no getting up the field at all really. They just treated it as a containment exercise and most of the time when you do that United are going to score three, four or five.

You’re better off going for a score draw because it is very rare indeed that a team comes away from a league game at Old Trafford having held United 0-0.
