No reason to fear the Old Firm

by Ian Crocker , 17 April 2009

The SPL prepares to split in half this weekend and there is still so much to play for. The race for the title seems set to go to the wire again.

Much will depend on the final Old Firm game of the season but the other four clubs have no reason to fear the Glasgow giants these days. There could be a few points dropped along the way.

I see Celtic's Scott Brown has blasted Scotland's disciplinary system which means he'll be suspended against Rangers. Although that may seem a severe case of the pot calling the kettle black (he could try getting booked less for starters) Brown is actually right!

I have long since given up working out the points system for bookings depending on the offence. Einstein struggled with it too apparently. Why should last season's cards be counted? Why doesn't Scotland do what everyone else does? Five yellows = one match ban. Ten yellows = two match ban. Is that too simple or what? At least that way, young Scottie can get his first suspension out of the way by September!

Hearts look set for a crack at the new Europa League and all credit to the engaging Csaba Laszlo, especially when your top scorer only has six goals. I've enjoyed watching Dundee United this season and I think they deserve fourth place and a bash at Europe. Sorry Aberdeen!

The last place in the top six will be decided this weekend. If Motherwell beat St Mirren on Saturday, Hibs will have to beat Rangers on Sunday.  When you look at the players Hibs have it would be a considerable underachievement if they end up in the bottom six.

Five teams are battling for survival. It'll be a shame if Falkirk go down because they have been good to watch and we would sure miss Yogi Hughes! If only they had a goalscorer. Mind you, a few teams are in that boat.

Terry Butcher has worked wonders to give Inverness a fighting chance.  But Billy Reid, Jim Jefferies and Gus McPherson will all feel they have enough about them to stay up. It's going to be a fascinating finale in the bottom half too and if Falkirk manage a couple of results immediately after the split - and I think they might -  it's gonna be horribly tight and tense down there! Good fun for the rest of us to watch!

The nominations have been made for Player of the Year with Scott Brown, Gary Caldwell, Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis up for the main award. Even allowing for a few set-piece issues for Celtic, I'd go for Caldwell. Andrew Driver, Steven Fletcher, James McCarthy and James McArthur contest the Young Player Award.  Four outstanding talents but I'd go for the one who gets the least publicity....James McArthur!
