Rangers have no excuses

by Ian Crocker , 21 May 2009

Rangers are in control of their own destiny and having been given a last chance they have no excuses.

Dundee United are always right up for it against the Glasgow giants though - and they need a point to be sure of European football. It couldn't be much tougher for Rangers unless they were going to Celtic. And what a shame we can't have that by the way. Just imagine, a final day Old Firm title decider!

I must say Walter Smith is an absolute gentleman to deal with although like most managers, especially Scottish ones, I'd hate to get on his wrong side! I suspect Kyle Lafferty did just that after his disgraceful behaviour against Aberdeen. Maybe his punishment from The SFA should've been instant. At least common sense has prevailed in freeing Madjid Bougherra for Sunday.   After a couple of quiet performances it's time for Kris Boyd to deliver. I suspect Kenny Miller will again be a key influence though.

Gordon Strachan must be the only manager to win three successive titles and have his own fans groaning. Celtic supporters often tell me the reason they can't take to Strachan is his chirpy attitude. To leave Aiden McGeady out of the Old Firm game and then say he doesn't have to explain his tactics to anyone riles the 60,000 punters who turn up every week thinking that actually he ought to explain it to them. But that's Gordon. He's 52 years old and he ain't for changing.

In nearly 20 years of commentating I can count the number of managers I've fallen out with on one...finger! I've had the occasional verbal lashing from Gordon but although I've argued with the wee fella I've never argued over his excellent record. If he wins FOUR in a row I'm sure the fans will lay off him.....until August! Although I wonder if he is due a decent job offer in England soon.

It's going to be a fascinating finale with a few twists surely. I reckon Celtic will beat Hearts so Rangers it's up to you! I wouldn't like to call it further than that.  I've never liked to call much in Glasgow - it's safer that way!
