We’re disappointed that we lost the Carling Cup final, but The Premier League’s the most important thing.
But if there’s anyone I felt sorry for on Sunday, it’s David Bentley. He’s probably not had his best season, but he put himself up for a penalty in the shootout.
His confidence is very low at the moment. This time last season, he was in the England squad and people were talking about him taking David Beckham’s place.
A year down the line, he’s struggling to get in the Tottenham team and his confidence is rock bottom.
When he stepped up to the plate, unfortunately he missed. That’s just the way it went.
He’s had personal problems and things like that and, when things are not going right in your home life, it’s very difficult to go to work and forget about those things. I think he’s had problems all over.
Hopefully, he can recover from that as soon as possible because he is an exceptional player when he’s on his game.
We didn’t practise penalties before the game, so I don’t know where Ben Foster got the video to watch us on the iPod before the shootout!
A lot of players don’t believe in practising penalties because you cannot replicate what happens in the stadium on a Saturday, wherever it may be.
Some players just turn up on the day and, if their bottle holds, they’ll score.
Some boys go out and they smash them in for ten minutes after training, hitting one after the other into the back of the net, and then they go out on a Saturday and they miss one.
But Foster looks a real talent. When I retired, I spent a year training at Watford and that was the year he was there on loan.
He was fantastic in training and in games and, when you looked at him, you thought, ‘This is a goalkeeper for the future’.
He’s fulfilling his potential now and I think he will go on and eventually be the England goalkeeper.
