Real test is still to come for cautious Benitez

by Paul Parker , 13 March 2009

Liverpool have done very well in the big games so far this season, but I think they’ll struggle against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez doesn’t like to throw caution to the wind. That’s the way he does things and he won’t change his way.

You can call him stubborn, but he’s got a way that he likes to play and he’ll stick with it in the hope that he can get something from Old Trafford.

They had a good result against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu a couple of weeks ago and that was what they deserved from that game because they were brave.

But, away from home, I don’t think things will change.

They’ll end up playing two central midfielders in front of the back four and, although that might work in the Champions League, it doesn’t work in The Premier League.

It’s different when you play against Manchester United at Old Trafford. You can’t play that way.

If you could, Liverpool would be winning Premier League titles under Benitez.

They’ve got to do something different.

Whatever Benitez does, though, it will be very difficult for them on Saturday.

Although he’s getting better and better, Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t really performed as well as he did last season – and that’s created other problems for the opposition.

Manchester United are more of a complete side now. They look galvanised.

That’s the reason people are finding it difficult. Before, it was all about stopping Ronaldo – now, there’s too many players.

There’s Berbatov, there’s Rooney, there’s Tevez and there’s a rejuvenated Ryan Giggs.
