England coach Fabio Capello hailed Chelsea skipper John Terry for the 'fantastic game' he played in the 3-1 win against Egypt on Wednesday night.
Capello, who stripped Terry of the Three Lions captaincy following revelations about his private life were made public, realised the big defender would be under the spotlight for the international friendly at Wembley on Wednesday.
Terry's first touch of the ball was met by a chorus of boos, but he went on to put in a solid performance to win over the vast majority of the 80,000 crowd and left Capello delighted.
"Thank you for the crowd," Capello said. "They supported the team and John Terry. This was a most important game for him after what happened outside the pitch. "
He played a fantastic game like I know he can do at this level.
When I chose him as captain I knew the value of him as a player." Meanwhile Terry's Blues' team-mate Frank Lampard has called on the England fans to stop booing their own players in the future.
He said: "The unity in the squad is fine.
We've only been together two or three days and everyone is here to concentrate on football and not concentrate on anything else.
"We've certainly done that. The manager is always very strong on that. We've trained, we've rested and there is a good spirit in the team. "
The boos for John were half expected.
It has happened before.
We know it doesn't do too many favours and I hope it doesn't happen again."
