Beckham: I'm not guaranteed place

by Tony Cuddihy , 14 March 2010

David Beckham says he is not guaranteed a place in Fabio Capello's World Cup squad, despite moving to AC Milan in January with the purpose of playing for England in South Africa this summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder is expected to be among the 23 players picked by Capello for the month-long tournament, but Beckham is taking nothing for granted and knows that he has to keep performing to a high standard if he is to travel.

Beckham said: "Am I banking on going to the World Cup? No, not at all.

"I am not guaranteed to go to South Africa. I have to work hard and hopefully win my place.

"There are a good few months left and plenty of games to play, but hopefully I can carry on playing well and get in the squad."

If he is chosen by Capello, Beckham will become the first England outfield player to take part in four World Cup Finals. He currently shares the record of three with Bobby Moore and Peter Shilton.
