Aston Villa close in on fourth

by setantasports.com staff , 16 March 2010

Aston Villa are now within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham in the Premier League, with a game in hand, after a 2-1 win at Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Gary Caldwell equalised a James McCarthy own goal in the first-half, but James Milner hit the winner just after the hour.

Villa had two goals ruled out for offside in the first quarter of an hour.
Gabriel Agbonlahor diverted the ball home from a John Carew flick-on after 11 minutes, then two minutes later Ashley Young turned in an Agbonlahor cross only for the flag to go up again.

Stewart Downing had an curling free-kick from the right tipped over the crossbar by Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, before Villa took the lead after 25 minutes.

Carew headed down a Downing cross, and McCarthy shanked an attempted clearance beyond Kirkland.

Wigan levelled within two minutes thanks to Saturday's villain Caldwell.
Caldwell was at fault for three of Bolton's goals in the Premier League at the weekend, but atoned with an equaliser goal.

The Scot glanced a header from Charles N'Zogbia's free-kick beyond Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.

Rodallega and Young then had half-chances before the break, whilst Carew also went close with first a backheel and then a shot from close range saved by Kirkland.

Marcelo Moreno saw an early second half curling effort just drift past the post for Wigan, then on the hour James Collins headed Young's free-kick down to Carew, but the Norwegian's flick was cleared off the line by Caldwell.

Villa's winner came on 63 minutes, when Kirkland failed to deal with a corner, and Milner shot through a crowded penalty area for his tenth goal of the season.
