All to play for in Europa League

by Staff , 01 April 2010

Atletico Madrid bagged two away goals in a 2-2 Europa League draw at Valencia on Thursday.

The hosts twice had to come from behind in the all-Spanish quarter-final tie as – after a goalless first half – Sergio Aguero played in strike partner Diego Forlan to fire the Madrid side in front.

Former Everton man Manuel Fernandes got the first of Los Che’s levellers when he buried a dipping strike past David De Gea, but little Antonio Lopez then finished off a Simao Sabrosa corner to put Atletico back in front.

David Villa had the final say though, the ace Spain striker collecting a beautiful pass from substitute Vicente to fire the ball home powerfully with his left foot.
Meanwhile in Germany, Hamburg came from behind to earn a narrow 2-1 advantage over Standard Liege.

The Belgian side, the outsiders for the competition, went in front on the half hour mark when Mehdi Carcela's corner found Dieumerci Mbokani and the latter headed the ball home for a useful away goal.

However, the Bundesliga side managed to turn the tide before half-time. Mladen Petric rammed home a penalty after a foul by Marcos Camozzato on Jonathan Pitroipa before Real Madrid loanee Ruud van Nistelrooy rattled home a brilliant half-volley to give his side the egde – just.
