Fulham fightback stuns Hamburg

by Mark Doyle , 29 April 2010

Fulham produced yet another stunning display at Craven Cottage as they came from a goal down against Hamburg to claim a 2-1 victory which secured Roy Hodgson's men a place in next month's Europa League final.

After securing a scoreless draw in the first leg in Germany last week, Fulham were the slight favourites to prevail but all of that changed on 22 minutes when Mladen Petric curled in a spectacular 30-metre free-kick for Hamburg.

However, Fulham refused to give in and drew level when Simon Davies bundled the ball home on 69 minutes after expertly controlling Danny Murphy's lofted pass before deftly flicking the ball over Guy Demel's head.

As it stood, the Cottagers were still heading out on the away goals rule but they booked their berth in Hamburg just seven minutes later when lashed home after the visitors had failed to adequately deal with a corner.

Fulham had started brightly and Bobby Zamora, after a neat one-two with Gera, was twice denied by Hamburg keeper Frank Rost. Brede Hangeland then headed over before Damien Duff fired wide as Fulham continued to dominate.

However, Hamburg looked increasingly menacing as the half wore on and only a vital interception from Aaron Hughes prevented David Jarolim from putting Petric in on goal. Petric was not to be denied moments later, though, when he beat Mark Schwarzer with a stunning free-kick, which had been awarded after Murphy had upended Ze Roberto.

Fulham were shell-shocked and they were lucky not to go in two behind at the interval, with Jonathan Pitroipa seeing a goal disallowed for offside, correctly, before the same player fired just wide moments later.

Hamburg continued to ooze control and composure after the interval but the whole momentum of the tie shifted with just over 20 minutes remaining. Murphy floated the ball into the box and Davies controlled it, before lifting it over Demel's head and then prodding it past Rost.

Pitroipa nearly wrested the initiative right back for Hamburg but he poked wide after beating John Pantsil but Fulham were brimming with belief now and they took the lead on 76 minutes, Gera spinning superbly before firing home after the ball had dropped to him in the box following Davies' corner.

Hamburg now had to score to progress but Ruud van Nistelrooy squandered their best chance to do so, and Fulham held on to secure a berth in a major European final for the first time in their history.
