Preview: Birmingham v Brentford (Tues)

by Setanta staff , 26 October 2010

Midfielder Craig Gardner will return to the Birmingham squad for the Carling Cup fourth-round clash with Brentford at St. Andrews, after completing a three-match ban for his sending off against Wigan.

Birmingham have included 17-year-old striker Akwasi Asante in their squad, after he scoring five goals against Tottenham in a youth-team game ten days ago.

Blues boss Alex McLeish is likely to start with Roger Johnson despite an ongoing calf problem, as defenders Stuart Parnaby and Martin Jiranek are injured.

Alexander Hleb is ruled out with a knee injury suffered in the weekend win over Blackpool but McLeish is confident he will be fit for Sunday's derby at Aston Villa.

Brentford striker Charlie MacDonald was withdrawn an hour into Saturday's 2-1 win over Peterborough due to illness, but should have recovered by Tuesday.

Richard Lee, the hero of the penalty shoot-out win over Everton in the previous round, replaces on-loan Reading goalkeeper Ben Hamer, who is cup-tied.

Carl Cort is still out with a torn Achilles.

Birmingham (from): Foster, Taylor, Carr, Johnson, Dann, Ridgewell, Parnaby, Larsson, Ferguson, Gardner, Bowyer, Fahey, O'Connor, Phillips, Zigic, Valles, Michel, Asante, Redmund, Derbyshire.
