Tottenham cruise into last 16

by Setanta.com staff , 24 November 2010

Tottenham cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League with an emphatic 3-0 win over Werder Bremen at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening.

Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Peter Crouch were the heroes for Harry Redknapp's side, who could afford a missed penalty by Gareth Bale.

Spurs took the lead after only six minutes when the irrepressible Aaron Lennon skipped past Daniel Jensen and crossed for Kaboul, who volleyed into the ground and inside the far post. It was the Frenchman's second goal in two games after his winner in the North London derby against Arsenal.

The rest of the first half belonged entirely to Spurs. Roman Pavlyuchenko had a great chance from another Lennon cutback in the 36th minute. He took a touch before firing towards goal, but Per Mertesacker got in to block.

The home side doubled their lead in first half injury time, when Crouch nodded Alan Hutton's cross into the path of Modric. The Croatian controlled it beautifully before firing part goalkeeper Tim Wiese.

Redknapp's men had a penalty on 53 minutes when Modric drew a foul from Kroos in the box. Bale's penalty was weak, however, and Wiese saved easily before the ball was cleared to safety.

Substitute Jermain Defoe forced a fine save from Wiese as the match drew to a close, and Tottenham's third came when Lennon skipped past Clemens Fritz, crossed to Crouch and the England striker did the rest, emphatically shooting past Wiese.
