Rangers are believed to be leading the way for Plymouth striker Bradley Wright-Phillips but another two clubs are in the running as well.
Wright-Phillips had been set to join Reading last week until the Championship club pulled out of the deal due to concerns over a knee problem.
Rangers have identified him as a possible replacement for Kenny Miller and it is thought a move for the Plymouth hitman will only happen if the Scottish international decides to leave Ibrox this month.
Birmingham, Fiorentina, Brescia and Bursaspor have all expressed an interest in the Gers striker and manager Walter Smith is waiting anxiously to see whether he will secure a switch immediately or wait until the summer when he can depart as a free agent.
Blackpool are back in the hunt for Wright-Phillips after having a first bid rejected over a week ago, but cash-strapped Argyle claim only one offer they have received is acceptable.
Plymouth's football consultant Peter Ridsdale has hinted that the Scottish giants are the front-runners though for the 25-year-old.
He said: "There are three clubs who have made bids since last Tuesday. One of them meets the value we have set for Bradley. That bid does require a player to leave the club concerned first if they are to go ahead with it.
"Two of the three bids are new to the table since last Tuesday. Bradley's market value is still there. Whatever problem he has got, it's only a short-term one.
"And presumably anybody wanting to sign him is intending to do so for a two or three-year period."
