Championship playoff pairings decided

by Setanta staff , 07 May 2011

Swansea City will play Nottingham Forest in the Championship playoffs, while Cardiff City will take on Reading in the battle for the final place in the Premier League.

Swansea's final day win over Sheffield United saw them leapfrog Cardiff and finish third. They will meet sixth-placed Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Thursday before welcoming Billy Davies' men to the Liberty Stadium for the second leg the following Monday (May 16).

Reading finished fifth and will host Cardiff in their semi-final first leg on Friday, with the second leg at the Cardiff City stadium pencilled in for four days later, 13 days before the Wembley final on May 30.

Swansea thumped relegated Sheffield United 4-0 on Saturday on their way to third place. Stephen Dobbie scored twice, while Scott Sinclair's penalty was added to late on by Leon Britton. The Blades' Shane Lowry was sent off for deliberate handball.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest eased their way to a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with Lewis McGugan, Marcus Tudgay and David McGoldrick all scoring, while Palace's Dean Moxey was red-carded.

Forest's win means that Leeds United could not make the playoffs, though they still earned an impressive 2-1 win over champions Queens Park Rangers. Max Gradel and Ross McCormack scored as Leeds came from behind to Heidar Helguson's opener at Loftus Road. However, QPR were still celebrating as they lifted the Championship trophy after being assured that they would not be deducted any points as a result of the hearing into Alejandro Faurlin's signing.

A late Craig Bellamy goal earned Cardiff a 1-1 draw at Burnley, who had scored through Jay Rodriguez, while Ian Harte's penalty and Hal Robson-Kanu's winner saw Reading beat Derby County 2-1, Jamie Ward with the Rams goal.

Promoted Norwich City could only draw their final home game 2-2 against Coventry. Grant Holt and the on-loan Daniel Pacheco scored for the Canaries, with Richard Keogh and Lukas Jutkiewicz getting the visitors' goals.

Relegated Preston ended their season with a 3-1 home win over Watford with Barry Nicholson, Iain Hume and Jamie Proctor all scoring after Anrdeas Weimann's Watford opener. Scunthorpe ended the season bottom after David Nugent's late equaliser for Portsmouth cancelled out Ramon Nunez's goal in a 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere, in-form Middlesbrough finished the season well - and in the top half - with a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers, with goals from Barry Robson, Leroy Lita and teenager Adam Reach, while Reuben Noble-Lazarus's goal was enough for Barnsley to beat Millwall 1-0 at Oakwell.

There was a goalfest at the Walkers' Stadium as Leciester beat Ipswich 4-2. Andy King, Yakubu and Yuki Abe made it 3-0 to the hosts, but Grant Leadbitter's penalty and Conor Wickham's strike saw Ipswich hit back. The home win was sealed though by Diomansy Kamara.

Finally, Bristol City earned a comfortable 3-0 win over Hull, the goals coming from Jonathan Stead, Brett Pitman and Jamal Campbell-Ryce.
