Celtic close gap on Rangers

by Tony Cuddihy , 08 May 2011

Celtic closed the gap to Rangers at the top of the SPL to a single point, after beating Kilmarnock 2-0 at Celtic Park on Sunday.

Skipper Scott Brown put his side ahead on the stroke of half-time, before Kris Commons secured the points in the second half.

Killie wasted the first chance of the game when James Dayton found himself in acres of space on the right, before bursting into the box and shooting wide of Fraser Forster's goal.

Commons had a goal correctly ruled out for offside and later grazed the crossbar with a curling effort.

Celtic finally had the lead on 45 minutes. A deep cross by Daryl Murphy was unselfishly headed into the path of Brown by James Forrest, with the Bhoys' skipper heading home.

Ki had a good effort from 35 yards in the second half, before Commons produced the best moment of the match on 67 minutes. The former Derby man, a revelation since his move north of the border, curled a brilliant left-footed effort past a stranded Cameron Bell.
