France to host 2018 Ryder Cup

by Shane Keegan , 17 May 2011

The 2018 Ryder Cup is to be held at the Le Golf National course near Paris.

The announcement was made by European Tour Chief Executive, George O'Grady, from a conference held in Wentworth, with France chosen as the venue after beating off competition from Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.

Reacting to the news, Paschal Grizot, the President of the French Ryder Cup committee, said: "It is an honour for our country.

"It is a huge accolade for all of the French golfers, and we are proud of the collective support we have had on this journey."

This is the first time that France are to host the Ryder Cup, and only the second time that the event will be held on continental Europe.

There had been calls for Spain to be awarded the competition in honour of Seve Ballesteros following his death last week, but the European Tour puts emotions to one side and picked France.

"I don't think it's a missed opportunity at all in the sense that we've been well aware of the legacy of Severiano Ballesteros throughout this bidding process," O'Grady said.

"Everything we do as the European Tour is to honour him. I don't think this is the last Ryder Cup that will be played in most of our lifetimes. It's just at the moment that the French bid was outstanding on the guidelines we laid down.

"We have an announcement about Seve coming in the next few months which will seek to do that (honour Ballesteros).
