Bhoys fall to home defeat

by Setanta Staff , 21 August 2011

Celtic fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Dave Mackay struck the only goal of the game on the hour-mark, after visiting goalkeeper Peter Enckelman had saved a very early penalty from Kris Commons, as Celtic dropped league points for the first time this season.

Enckelman conceded the spot kick when he took down Anthony Stokes, but dived to his right to save from Commons.

With Shaun Maloney controlling matters, Celtic looked likely to be able to forget about the penalty miss, but passed up a number of good opportunities to take the lead in the first half.

Commons came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval, his free-kick coming back off the upright five minutes prior to half-time.

Neil Lennon's men continued to dominate in the early stages of the second period, but fell behind when MacKay’s volley deflected off Joe Ledley and beat Frazer Forster, seconds after the goalkeeper had kept out a strike from Jody Morris.

The Bhoys, despite continuing to be a danger in attack, were rocked by the concession of the goal and Sean Higgins was almost presented with a fine chance as Daniel Majstorovic and Forster suffered a mix-up.

At the other end, substitute Paddy McCourt had become the chief string-puller, striking the post with an effort, before Maloney’s free-kick went just wide after the Derry-born winger had been fouled.

Celtic laid siege to the St Johnstone goal in the closing stages, but the visitors held on for an unexpected three points.
