Rangers win well at 'Well

by Setanta staff , 21 August 2011

Rangers defeated Motherwell 3-0 at Fir Park on Sunday to end the home side’s unbeaten start to the season.

The victory for Ally McCoist’s men takes them to the top of the Scottish Premier League after Steven Naismith, Kyle Lafferty and Greg Wylde netted against Stuart McCall’s hosts.

Youngsters Jordan McMillan and Ross Perry started in the Gers defence, but Jamie Murphy could not punish any uncertainty in those quarters when he spurned an early chance, while Allan McGregor denied him later in the half.

Nikica Jelavic then headed off target for the Gers before he played his part in their opening goal 20 minutes in. Steven Davis sent in a corner, with the Croatian rising to attack it before Naismith stole the final touch to Darren Randolph’s net.

McGregor denied Nicky Law’s effort, with Jelavic going close again for Rangers. Murphy then found the net for ‘Well, but the effort was ruled out for handball.

And the contest was as good as over at half-time, with Lafferty running onto Juan Ortiz’s pass and smashing the ball in off the post for a 2-0 interval lead.

Lafferty and Naismith both went close again early in the second half before Chris Humphrey’s cross bounced back off the Rangers crossbar as 'Well looked for a way back in, in vain.

Later, Davis hit a fierce drive against the bar, with a subsequent Naismith header also coming back off the woodwork as ruthless Rangers looked for more.

And they were rewarded for not sitting back when, with five minutes left, Wylde ran onto a long ball over the top from Davis and placed the ball past the despairing Randolph.
