Barry header seals England win

by Setanta Staff , 15 November 2011

Gareth Barry's first half header saw England beat Sweden for the first time since 1968 in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday.

The goal came midway through the first half, as the Manchester City midfielder got on the end of a cross by Stewart Downing.

The ball deflected off Daniel Majstorovic before going in.

Phil Jones had a fine chance to open his England account but saw his shot go wide after a fine solo run.

Everton's Jack Rodwell clipped the post with a header, while Downing should have scored with a low strike, but England deserved their win in a low key, low tempo affair.

"I learned a lot," England manager Fabio Capello said.

"It was important to see some players against two difficult teams. I'm happy with the experiments, the results were positive. For the future, these players will be okay.

"Without Rooney we changed the style, played three midfielders in a 4-3-3. I'm happy because we won the two games and this evening we created a lot of chances.

"I know Rooney is a really fantastic, important player, but the team spirit is important. I saw in these two games really good spirit."
