Butterfield calls for understanding from fans

by Setanta Staff , 29 December 2011 Butterfield calls for understanding from fans

Barnsley skipper Jacob Butterfield has pleaded with the club's fans not to give him a hard time while talks continue over his new contract offer.

Butterfield, out of contract next summer and yet to agree to a "substantially improved" new deal at Oakwell, has been a target for the Tykes' boo-boys in recent weeks after being linked with a move to Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who moaned on Twitter about being booed by a small section of fans at the end of the Boxing Day defeat to Blackpool, said: "The Twitter thing - for the most part I had a good reaction when the man of the match was announced but there were a few negative shouts I heard from the stand. "

I just hope the fans aren't treating me differently due to the contract situation because we're still working on it.

It's still on-going and I hope they don't treat me different because of it.

"In the main I think Barnsley fans enjoy watching me play and are glad to have me at the club. Every player wants to play at the highest level, and I'm not saying I'm going to go and play in the Premier League now, but Barnsley have offered me a contract and these things take time, they don't happen overnight because I'll be committing the next three or four years of my life, so I've got to make sure everything's right. "

In a way it's out of my hands.

If Barnsley accept a bid for me, if it does come in, then I might have to go and speak to somebody, but if Barnsley don't accept any bids for me then I'm still very much a Barnsley player.

I play for Barnsley now and I'm really enjoying my football, so I'll focus on that for now."
