Raul's away goal breaks record

by Roger Scott , 15 February 2011

Raul became the leading scorer of all time in major European competitions as Schalke drew 1-1 with Valencia in the Champions League.

Roberto Soldado had given the hosts the lead in the last 16 first leg tie at the Mestalla on Tuesday, but the Spanish veteran struck in the second half with a vital away goal, and one that sees him move to 70 in Europe, clear of the legendary German Gerd Muller.

The La Liga side were dominant in the first half, once Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fluffed an early chance for Schalke.

Valencia went on front when flying full back Jeremy Mathieu stormed clear on the left and crossed to the near post where Soldado had run free, and he beat Manuel Neuer in the Schalke goal with a first-time effort.

Soldado again, Aritz Aduriz and Tino Costa all went close for the hosts before half-time, but they only led 1-0 at that stage.

The German side bounced back after the interval, Raul – determined to score on his Spain return after such a distinguished career with Real Madrid –forced a save from Vicente Guaita from 18 yards.

His time would come though. Fellow Spaniard Jose Manuel Jurado proved to be the provider, the midfielder feeding his compatriot who smashed Muller’s record as he took a touch before slotting to Guaita’s net.

Chinese midfielder Hao Junmin almost won the night for the Bundesliga men, but Guaita tund his late effort behind, before the German side ended the game with ten men when Lukas Schmitz received a second yellow card right on full-time.
