Rangers hit four past Saints

by Michelle Fortune , 27 February 2011

Rangers have closed the gap on Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League to five points following their 4-0 win over St Johnstone on Sunday.

Kyle Lafferty and Sasa Papac scored in between strikes from Nikica Jelavic to hand Walter Smith's side a victory that sees them move to within five points of their Old Firm rivals.

With Celtic going down 2-0 to Motherwell in the early kick-off, Rangers knew victory over St Johnstone would help them close the gap in the title race and they did not disappoint with Jelavic opening the scoring after just four minutes.

Maurice Edu's effort was blocked, but Jelavic pounced on the rebound with a brilliant volley that left Peter Enckelman had little chance of stopping.

The St Johnstone players argued the ball had struck Madjid Bougherra, but referee Steven McLean waved away their objections and the goal was allowed to stand.

Rangers pressed for another, but Smith was forced into a change after just 17 minutes when Michael Duberry went off injured.

Despite the change they threatened to double their lead when Lafferty sent in a clever cross, only for Jelavic to miss and Healy's strike to be blocked by Enckelman.

Lafferty then squandered his own chance but made amends four minutes before the break when he headed Wylde's header into the back of the net.

St Johnston rarely threatened after the interval, although Murray Davidson did go close to netting for the visitors, but it was the defending champions who dominated the final 45 minutes.

The victory was all but wrapped up in the 81st minute when Papac combined with Jelavic to slot home and then it was the turn of Jelavic to complete his brace in injury time.
