Potters' Cup tie goes ahead

by Setanta Staff , 06 January 2012

Gillingham's FA Cup third-round match with Stoke will go ahead after the npower League Two club reached an agreement with Kent Police.

The game had been under threat of postponement after Medway Council revealed police had advised it would be unsafe for it to go ahead without a police presence at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

A council statement said they understood there was 'a dispute between the football club and Kent Police about the costs of policing the stadium', which could leave the sell-out match without any police officers attending.

However, discussions between the Gills and Kent Police have resulted in an agreement, meaning there will be a police presence at the ground.

Councillor Mike O'Brien, Medway Council's portfolio holder for community safety and customer contact, said: "Following advice from Kent Police that they have specific intelligence that it could be unsafe for the match to go ahead without them being present within the ground, Medway Council issued a statement requiring the presence of the police at the match inside the stadium.

"Kent Police and Gillingham Football Club have since been in further discussions to resolve their differences in this matter and we understand these talks have now concluded and that Kent Police will be providing a police presence within the stadium at the match."
