Anichebe denies Wigan at DW

by Dave Maher , 04 February 2012

Substitute Victor Anichebe rescued a point for Everton away to Wigan Athletic in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

Phil Neville scored an own-goal, with Tim Howard heavily at fault, to give the hosts the lead, but Anichebe netted a powerful header to secure a 1-1 draw and leave the hosts at the foot of the table.

Darren Gibson, who netted the winner for Everton as they beat Manchester City in midweek, had the only clear chance of the first half at the DW Stadium, shooting high and wide following an excellent cut-back by Leighton Baines.

The Toffees made the early running in the second half, with Steven Pienaar and Landon Donovan influential, but failed to truly test Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

The home side took advantage of Everton's lack of penetration when Jean Beausejour's low cross was diverted towards goal by Neville, with Howard deceived by the spin on the ball, as Wigan hit the front on 76 minutes.

Everton immediately regained control of the game and levelled soon afterwards. A Baines corner was cleared from the penalty by the Wigan defence, but straight back to the full-back, who crossed for Anichebe to power home a header.
