Scolari asks questions of 'captain' Cech

by Ben Blackmore , 28 December 2008

Luiz Felipe Scolari was left asking questions of goalkeeper Petr Cech after Chelsea surrendered a lead in the dying minutes to draw 2-2 at Fulham.

Twice The Blues conceded to set-pieces at Craven Cottage, both times Clint Dempsey was the man to benefit.

Dempsey’s second goal particularly annoyed Scolari, who was left to question why the nearest player to the goalscorer was ANOTHER Fulham player.

The Chelsea boss refused to accept he himself was at fault for leaving a post unguarded, instead pointing the finger at Cech’s organisation.

"Posts do not score goals, players score goals," stated Scolari.

"I asked Petr what happened because one player was free in the middle of the area in the last minute.

“It is incredible. Petr is the captain for this area.

"We lost two points today. We made two mistakes with our marking and conceded two goals. I think they had one more chance - we had 10 chances and scored two goals.

“It is my job now to look and see what happened. It is my dressing room. I need to look at it.”

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson reflected on an excellent first 12 months in charge of Fulham, a year in which he saved them from relegation, and he labelled his spell at Craven Cottage ‘the best of my career’.

"It's been one of the best managerial years of my career, if not the best. I'm immensely satisfied with what we've achieved in 2008,” said Hodgson.

"It was a remarkable achievement for the players to show the spirit and the character they showed to come back and keep the unbeaten run going.

"We didn't start the second half well and as a result of their good pressure they scored two goals. After we went 2-1 down we did find our feet again a little bit, we did play more football and as a result we were able to put their goal under more pressure."
