Big Sam rubbishes 'exodus' talk

by Robin Hackett , 01 June 2009

Blackburn Sam Allardyce has rubbished suggestions the club faces a ‘mass exodus of stars’.

A Sunday tabloid claimed this weekend that a number of key players could be set to leave Ewood Park this summer, but Allardyce insists that he will only part with those he wants to sell.

He told the club’s official website: “We are looking to build a squad here rather than dismantle one, so no one will be leaving this summer unless I feel it is in the best interests of the club.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact there is some rebuilding work to be done so, to that end, there will be some comings and goings.

“However, the plan is to build a team around some of the key players we already have here.

“The majority of them are on decent-length contracts so I’m quite relaxed about the situation.”

Meanwhile, defender Zurab Khizanishvili is set to hold talks with boss Sam Allardyce to decide if he has a future at the club.

The 27-year-old Georgia international started just three games last season and, while he is not unhappy, he admits he could be set to move on.

"It has been a little bit frustrating because the football side of things has not been going as I hoped it might be," he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"The season, though, is finished, so we will see what happens next season.

"There is no point talking about what happened in the past.

"I still have a two-year contract with Blackburn. It is up to them really, so all I can do is look forward.

"I don't know if I will still be here next season. All I can say is I have a contract so I am a Blackburn Rovers player.

"I want to play here, but that is my opinion. I don't know what the club are thinking so we will have to talk and see what happens from there.

"I still like it at Blackburn. I am not unhappy – I just wish I was playing a bit more."
