Fulop flattered by Panathinaikos link

by Robin Hackett , 03 June 2009

Sunderland goalkeeper Marton Fulop says he is ‘very flattered’ to have been linked with a move to Panathinaikos.

The 26-year-old Hungary international enjoyed regular first-team football last season due to injuries to Craig Gordon, but it remains unclear whether he would have to return to an understudy role next season.

And, although he insists he is happy at Sunderland, Panathinaikos are reportedly ready to pay £1.8 million for his services and he admits he would be relish the chance to play for the Greek giants.

“It is a very flattering prospect,” he told Goal Day.

“This is one of the top clubs in Europe, with success at a local level as well as regularly appearing in the Champions League, and it makes sense that any player would be interested in going there.

“It would be an honour to join such a club.”

He added: “The issue will be handled by my agent and I expect things to develop later.

“I have a contract with Sunderland and I enjoy it here. It is really just an issue for the two clubs – Panathinaikos and Sunderland.

“If a formal offer is made, it is up to the two clubs to find an agreement.”
