Bruce will get funds

by Richard Field , 04 June 2009

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn says new manager Steve Bruce will be given the funds he needs to strengthen his squad.

The Black Cats have reportedly paid Wigan £3 million in compensation to bring Bruce to the Stadium of Light, and the deep pockets of new owner Ellis Short will be at Bruce’s disposal for the right players.

“He [Bruce] knows he will be backed,” Quinn told Setanta Sports News.

“As long as we are intelligent, slick in what we do, our scouting network is good and Steve’s record is up there with the best, then the backing will come.

“That must be good news for him and he can go away and ponder that.

“We’ll have targets and hopefully we’ll create a little bit of a buzz here. The first one comes and then maybe one or two will follow.

“We must be very careful not to dismantle what is good about our football team at the moment. We have some terrific players.”

Bruce is in agreement that wholesale changes is not the path to follow as the Sunderland boss predicts an 'exciting' time for supporters of the club.

“The one thing I want to try and do is obviously keep the people who are here, there is the nucleus of a very good team here,” Bruce also told Setanta Sports News.

“We’ll try and enhance that if we possibly can and also the people that we are looking at and try and add to the squad.

“One thing I have never spoken about to the owner is money. All I have had a conversation about is trying to take the club forward but it is fair to say that he is now in complete control.

"Working with him and working with Niall, all the infrastructure is here.”
