Setanta's end-of-season awards: Villa

by setanta.com staff , 05 June 2009

Like Darius Vassell's England career, the season is well and truly over, so it's time to dish out the end-of-season gongs.

Who made the difference in your club's season? Who lived up to all expectations like a sausage sandwich after a big night out? And who flopped like Pele without viagra?

Below, the setanta.com office has joined forces to pick our success stories and disappointments of a quite gripping campaign, feel free to congratulate us on our genius or destroy us for our cluelessness using the comments box below.

ASTON VILLA

Player of the season: Martin Laursen
The Dane was a tower of strength in the early stages of the season, commanding at the back and a threat at set pieces in the opposition penalty area. He looked like the player that earned a move to Milan earlier in his career, but the injury demons reared again and he was sadly forced to announce his retirement in May.

Young player of the season: Ashley Young
Young started the season like a steam train and in tandem with Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew, lifted Villa into the mix for Champions League quialification. Villa's form tailed off late in the campaign and they were swamped by Arsenal, but Young emerges from the season with great credit.

Best signing: Brad Friedel
Shelling out £2.5 million on a 37-year-old may not be viewed as good business sense, but Martin O'Neill's dealing proved to be an astute move as Friedel had an excellent season between the sticks.

Worst signing: Emile Heskey
Heskey revived his England career at Wigan and Steve Bruce was desperate to keep him, but with the fear of losing him in the summer for nothing The Latics reluctantly accepted Villa's offer. O'Neill viewed him as the ideal man to lead the attack and he netted on his debut, but grabbed just one more goal from 13 games as Villa's bid for Champions League football faltered.

Disappointment of the season: Missing out on the Champions League
Villa looked on course for Champions League football for much of the season, so much so that O'Neill fielded a fringe side in the Uefa Cup to boost their chances. They were dumped out by CSKA Moscow, their season unravelled and Arsenal came riding througth to finish fourth.

Moment of the campaign: Dramatic win over Everton
The undoubted high point of the campaign was Young's stunning goal in the 3-2 win over Everton. Just seconds after Joleon Lescott had levelled the scores for Everton, Young raced past the same player to fire home a stunning winner.
