End-of-season awards: Sunderland

by setanta.com staff , 05 June 2009

Like Darius Vassell's England career, the season is well and truly over, so it's time to dish out the end-of-season gongs.

Who made the difference in your club's season? Who lived up to all expectations like a sausage sandwich after a big night out? And who flopped like Pele without viagra?

Below, the setanta.com office has joined forces to pick our success stories and disappointments of a quite gripping campaign, feel free to congratulate us on our genius or destroy us for our cluelessness using the comments box below.

Player of the season: Danny Collins. Primarily a central defender, the 28-year-old was the definition of versatile, filling in at left back for much of the campaign. In a difficult season, Collins was one of The Black Cats' few ray of lights.

Young player of the season: Jordan Henderson. The talented winger, who has already graced The Premier League, has enjoyed some first-team action on loan with Championship side Coventry since January. The 18-year-old impressed and though he returned in May with a broken metatarsal he is certainly one to watch next season.

Best signing: Djibril Cisse. Signed on loan last August, Cisse hit the ground running by scoring on his debut against Spurs and netted in the Tyne-Wear derby – giving him immediate hero status with the fans. Despite returning to Marseille he scored 10 league goals in a team fighting for survival.

Worst signing: Pascal Chimbonda. Chimbonda moved from Spurs to team up with former team-mates Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque but endured a nightmare spell up north. He returned to Spurs after only 13 appearances. Enough said.

Disappointment of the season: Roy Keane. Kenwyne Jones can feel hard done by to miss out on this award but the departure of Keane edges out the Trinidad and Tobago striker. The hot-headed Irishman left in December after falling out with Niall Quinn and part-owner Ellis Short and after great success at the Stadium of Light his sour exit was a crying shame.

Moment of the season: Steve Bruce's appointment. Despite losing to Chelsea on the last day of the season, Sunderland escaped relegation courtesy of the failings of other teams. Perhaps the biggest cheer was saved for the arrival of Ricky Sbragia’s replacement, Steve Bruce – an excellent acquisition who could lead the team to new heights.
