Robinson: Santa Cruz won't Roque the boat

by Toby Davis , 07 June 2009

Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson has backed boss Sam Allardyce to pull off a transfer masterstroke if Roque Santa Cruz quits the club.

The Paraguayan’s future remains in doubt as he continues to be linked with a big-money move away from the club.

But Robinson insists the club is in safe hands and has backed Allardyce to spend any money from the Santa Cruz sale wisely.

"It's not for us to speculate about Roque," the goalkeeper told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"It's a silly time when people are going here, there and everywhere.

"But one of the manager's qualities is in the transfer market.

"We're a club that's financially stable but we aren't able to throw millions of pounds left, right and centre.

"The manager's very good at knowing the type of player he wants and dealing in the market to get what he wants, so he'll do what's right for the team and the club.

"If we do lose Roque, I'm sure the manager will use the funds cleverly to improve the squad."

Rovers spent most of last season battling against relegation but Robinson has confidence in his manager to help them climb the table this time around.

He said: "I think with the manager and coaching staff we've got here, I don't think we'll be in this predicament again. I think we'll be a lot higher up the table next year.

"I think next year with the manager we've got, his work ethics and what he wants from his team, I don't think you'll see us struggling in the bottom half of the league.

"Maybe he wasn't given enough time at Newcastle. He was only given six months. I think given time, as you'll see here, you'll see the club flourish next year."
