Upson welcomes Hammers takeover

by Chris Stanton , 08 June 2009

Matthew Upson hopes the takeover of West Ham United will mean more money to spend for manager Gianfranco Zola.

The East London side confirmed on Monday that they had been sold to an asset management group, CB Holding, whose majority shareholder is an Icelandic bank in a deal reported to be worth £100 million.

Beleaguered owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and vice-chairman Asgeir Fridgeirsson have both left the club and The Hammers hope the move will end their recent financial strife.

“I think it’s a positive thing from what I can gather,” said Upson speaking at an England press conference.

“Any kind of financial investment into the team and into the club is great.

"We’re in a crucial period in terms of developing the team.

“It’s a positive sign that the manager can go out and strengthen the squad.”

Upson, who is now established as England’s third-choice centre back and will feature again against Andorra on Wednesday in the absence of Rio Ferdinand, believes this season has been the best of his career.

“It’s the most games I’ve ever played," he added. "It’s the best season of my career to date.

"I feel I’ve improved and developed so I’m very positive about next season."

Upson is pleased by the performance he gave against Kazakhstan on Saturday and claims he has an understanding with captain John Terry.

“It works well. I played with John all the way through the Under-21s so we’re not strangers on the pitch and I think it’s important to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses."
