Right back: Mark Wilson (Celtic) If he can stay injury free, Celtic's Mark Wilson would be a very good addition to the right-hand side of Burnley's defence which is manned manfully if slightly inadequately by Michael Duff.
Alternatives: Steven Whittaker (Rangers), David van Zanten (Hibernian)
Centre back: Calum Davenport (West Ham United) We wouldn't normally advise playing Calum Davenport, so to actually advocate his potential signing is contrary. But hear us out! The occasionally unconvincing West Ham United defender is possessing of a commodity, pace, which is lacking in both Clarke Carlisle and Steven Caldwell and which could be exposed by this country's best attackers.
Alternative: Chris Riggott (Middlesbrough)
Centre midfielder: Sean Davis (Portsmouth) Coyle's teams like to pass it but need someone in the middle with a bit of Premier League presence. Step forward Sean Davis, who is soon to be out of contract at Portsmouth. Whether Davis, a Southerner by experience and perhaps inclination, would fancy the move up north is for Burnley to find out.
Alternatives: Julio Arca (Middlesbrough), Fabian Delph (Leeds United)
Striker: Jermaine Beckford (Leeds United) A new striker is less of a priority for The Clarets. Martin Paterson and Steven Thompson got the goals to get them up and will likely be given their chance again in the top flight. But, with only Jay Rodriguez for support, Coyle wouldn't mind another frontman and, for £1 million, Burnley should take a punt on Beckford.
Alternative: Darius Vassell (Manchester City)
