Peter Crouch appears to be assessing his own future after claiming that Portsmouth have taken a ‘backward step’ since their FA Cup win last year.
The striker wants reassurances about how the club are going to progress due to the uncertainty over who will manage the club next season, a substantial list of out-of-contract players and the ownership issue.
This unsettling situation is in stark contrast to the halcyon days under the guidance of former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp which saw the club qualify for Europe and lift the FA Cup trophy at Wembley.
A number of quality players have followed Redknapp out of the South Coast club and Crouch wants to see the existing squad strengthened.
“I’m really disappointed. We had Harry, we had Jermain Defoe and Lassana Diarra, we were in Europe and there were ambitions for the club going forward. Instead it has taken a backward step,” Crouch said in the News of the World.
“We need to sign some players without a doubt. That’s plain to see. Every Portsmouth player wants to find out what is going on.
“Hopefully, things can turn around with new owners. We need to strengthen the side. But I’ve no idea about the new owners.”
