Wolves confirm Milijas capture

by Joseph Caron Dawe , 15 June 2009

Wolves have confirmed their first capture of the summer with the signing of Nenad Milijas from Crvena Zvezda for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old Serbian midfielder joins the newly-promoted Premier League outfit on a four-year deal from the side formerly known as Red Star Belgrade.

Milijas’ transfer is subject to a work permit being granted, but as an established Serbia international the Midlands outfit have little doubt one will be forthcoming.

“We're really thrilled to have started our summer recruitment with Nenad Milijas,” said Wolves CEO Jez Moxey.

“Nenad is a star player and an international of some note in what is a very talented Serbian team.

“He scored 16 goals from 30-odd games for Red Star Belgrade last season from central midfield and is also a physical presence who can play in a variety of different positions as well as being left-footed which gives the team more balance.

“He's got plenty of experience but also at 26 years old is in the prime of his career.

“This is a big signing for us and we are absolutely delighted with it.”

Moxey continued: “The deal is still subject to obtaining a work permit because Serbia is outside the EU.

“We are going to make a quite detailed application because he doesn't quite fulfil the criteria so it will probably go to appeal.

“But he has been a regular in Serbia's senior international team for the last season as well as being a key member of the under-21 set-up before that.

“He's also been captain of Red Star Belgrade which is a club renowned for its successes both at home and in European competitions.

“We will be submitting the application in the next day or so.”

Milijas insists he cannot wait to get down to business and is determined to make the most of his time at Molineux.

He said: "Wolves are a very big club and I am delighted to have agreed to join. Hopefully I can come in and help Wolves in The Premier League and I am sure Wolves will help my career as well."
