Agent reveals English interest in Simunic

by Robin Hackett , 19 June 2009

Hertha Berlin defender Josip Simunic is attracting interest from England, Spain and Germany, according to his agent.

The 31-year-old Croatia international has repeatedly spoken of his ‘dream’ of moving to The Premier League and Fulham and Portsmouth are said to have revived their interest in the player.

The player’s agent, Gordon Stipic, says Simunic is unhappy with Hertha boss Lucien Favre and, as he has a €7 million (£5.92m) exit clause in his contract until June 30, he says he is desperate to leave as soon as possible.

“For me, it is clear that Simunic must leave,” he told Bild.

“There is no basis for cooperation and the decision is non-negotiable.

“The reason is the behaviour of Hertha coach Lucien Favre.”

He added: “There is interest from England, Spain and Germany, but I will not name the clubs.”

Reports suggest Favre held a meeting with Hertha president Werner Gegenbauer in which he proposed cashing in on the player as he doubted he would be able to retain last season’s form.

However, the club’s general manager, Michael Preetz, has denied those rumours.

“This story that has been doing the rounds is untrue,” he said.

“The coach would like to keep Joe. He is a key player for him.”

Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Hoffenheim are the other clubs said to be interested in Simunic.
