Exclusive: Wigan harbour Scotland interest

by Tom Kell , 22 June 2009

Jason Scotland’s agent has confirmed to setanta.com that Wigan have expressed an interest in his client.

Mike Berry last week revealed that Owen Coyle is interested in reuniting with his former St Johnstone charge at Burnley.

This was firmed up on Friday when Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins admitted that the club had rejected an offer from The Clarets for the Trinidad and Tobago international.

Wigan have always been likely to emerge as potential suitors considering manager Roberto Martinez’s links with the player and Berry is now awaiting further developments.

“We’re waiting for the green light from Swansea now,” Berry told setanta.com.

“I’m pretty sure that Wigan have expressed their interest to Swansea but they haven’t made a formal offer yet.

“We’re now waiting for one of the two clubs to have a bid accepted and then we can step in and talk terms.

“Jason is very much ‘what will be will be’. He’s flying home from international duty at the moment and, as he’s always said, is very keen to play in The Premier League.

“Let’s hope he can soon.”

Jenkins appears confident that the likes of Scotland, Ferrie Bodde and Angel Rangel will not be following Martinez out of the door.

"I am honestly not worried, because they are all securely under contract – so the prospect of that doesn't bother me at all,” he added. "There is nothing at all in any of the speculation.

“Every single one of our players is under contract, and there has been no conversation between myself and Wigan about players.

"We start back in pre-season training this week, and we'll be making every effort to strengthen the squad, not weaken it.”
