Striker arrives for City medical

by Tom Adams , 22 June 2009

Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz is reported to be having a medical at Manchester City ahead of his long-awaited move to Eastlands.

The Paraguay international has been a target ever since the man who brought him to Ewood Park in 2007, Mark Hughes, moved to City in the summer of 2008.

Despite some fitness problems that restricted him to four goals in 18 Premier League appearances last season, City also tabled an offer in January only to see their bid fail when Rovers failed to line up a suitable replacement.

But after repeatedly expressing his desire to leave Blackburn, Santa Cruz is now close to moving to an ambitious City side that have already added Gareth Barry to their squad this summer.

If he completes his medical then it is believed the 27-year-old will move for a fee of £18 million, reflecting his prolific debut season in England when he scored 19 league goals in the 2007-2008 campaign.

Prior to joining Blackburn, Santa Cruz had spent eight years at Bayern Munich but never managed to score more than five goals in a Bundesliga season as he struggled extensively with medical problems.
