Striker hunt continues after Villa blow

by Richard Field , 23 June 2009

Real Madrid are looking elsewhere for a striker after giving up on signing Valencia forward David Villa.

Cash-strapped Valencia are keen to hold on to the Spanish international striker having originally looked set to sell their star asset.

Real Madrid Director General Jorge Valdano has confirmed their withdrawal from the pursuit of Villa but they are still in the market to bring in a new hit-man.

"The situation with Villa is 100 percent finished. There was a call from president to president in which they told us that Villa was not for sale," Valdano told RNE.

"We understand that we need to go for an alternative, which we are working on."

As Real look to continue their signing spree, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Karim Benzema and Diego Forlan have all been linked with the Bernabeu.

"Forlan, Ibrahimovic and Benzema are three greats of world football. But that does not mean Madrid are working towards signing one of them," added Valdano.
