Madrid chief hints at double Anfield swoop

by Toby Davis , 23 June 2009

Real Madrid general director Jorge Valdano says he will not let his personal differences with Rafa Benitez come between negotiations for Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.

The duo have been linked with moves to the Bernabeu, with some reports suggesting Madrid would offer €45 million (£38.56 million) for the pair.

Benitez has always maintained his intention to hang on to playmaker Alonso, but admitted he would consider offers for Arbeloa, who has only one year remaining on his current deal.

But Valdano hints at a move for both players and admitted talks would not be jeopardised by his suppossed poor relations with Benitez.

When asked about Alonso in an interview with AS, Valdano said: "There we have possibilities but I don't want to say anything that will make negotiations difficult. We will wait for the right time.

"What I'm sure about is that Liverpool and Real Madrid are above personal relationships. Benitez was here and has kept friendships with employees of the club.

"Personal disagreements matter little in this. I don't think they'd affect the negotiations."

And about Arbeloa, Valdano added: "It's true that the kid only has a year left on his contract at Liverpool and this offers more possibilities.

"He plays at number two and at three, and this versatility is good. We know him well. He is another option to weigh up."
