King Arthur doesn't get royal approval

by Andy Kerr , 17 March 2009

It was supposed to be the night that proved to a British audience at least that Arthur Abraham was the best middleweight in the world.

In fact what it probably did was give encouragement to our best in the division that they are not that far away from a shot at world title glory. Darren Barker and Matt Macklin won't exactly be running scared after seeing the IBF champion beat unbeaten Lajuan Simon.

Abraham was too good to lose but as Buncey said on air that wasn't the performance that will get him Kelly Pavlik. Which in truth is the fight the boxing world really wants to see. Not ideal for King Arthur but he'll come back better for it.

The expression also summed up what happened to us behind the scenes at the weekend. We love the term technical gremlins it covers a multitude of sins. Well they were out in force on Saturday. Our Autocue system crashed. That's the device which lets me read what I've written through the camera rather than memorising or ad libbing a script. That meant a hasty re-write 15 minutes before we went on air. Then with 2 minutes to go the studio monitors decided to go on the blink, so that we couldn't see pictures in the studio. that might not sound that bad but it's a bit like broadcasting blind. How our director Emma remained so calm and had everything working again as we reached 30 seconds to on air was a miracle.

In the end our show went off without any real hitch. Had Micheal Sprott been equally calm he might've been closer to Lamon Brewster. He looked nervous early on and by the time he realised Brewster wasn't the second coming of Tyson and couldn't hurt him it was too late.

Former British and European champion Cathy Brown made our coverage of the women's world title fight. Her insight was fascinating, as Cecilia Braekhus became WBC/WBA welterweight champion. And although her pre fight prediction wasn't as sharp as Buncey's she wasn't wrong in predicting that the fight would outshine the heavyweights that proceeded them. I feel safe in predicting we'll see more womens world title fights on Team Sauerland cards in the future, and after Saturday they will be there on merit.

We're back in Germany in 3 weeks when we'll see if Alexander Povetkin really has a better claim to a heavyweight title shot than our own David Haye. Speaking of which our next live boxing is the Hayemaker show in Liverpool on March 28th. Until then we're back on the boxing hour this Thursday. See you then.
