Shakhtar are slight favourites for Uefa Cup

by Brian Little , 08 May 2009

After watching the two Uefa Cup semi-finals on Thursday, I would have to put Shakhtar Donetsk as slight favourites for the final.

I think Werder Bremen will want the dust to settle (following their win over Hamburg) as they have lost Diego and Hugo Almeida for the final. Those will be two costly bookings for them.

I was impressed with Bremen - with how they approached the game, their attitude towards digging in there when they were behind, and the fact that at half-time they knew they were losing Diego but they still kept going. So you can't discount them.

When you've really got to produce a result, that is when you find out how good your team really are. Hamburg, like so many teams in different divisions and in different countries, really have now found out that they are a little bit wanting.

At the same time, it was good game of football. After watching the first leg of the semi-final, Hamburg were in control, but give Bremen their credit for how they turned it around.

I thought Frank Baumann was terrific for Bremen. He steadied them and just his influence of being out there probably helped them. There was a little bit of magic from Diego in the first-half, but his team stuck at it and dug their way back into the game.

In Shakhtar's game, I felt that Dynamo Kiev did well for 45 minutes in the first leg, but since then Shakhtar were consistently better.

They made good substitutions at important times and it worked for them. There is a Brazilian theme to their side, which you can't deny gives them a little edge in a game of football as one of the five of them is always likely to do something.

They definitely edged the game over Kiev and their manager Mircea Lucescu gets full marks for his positivity.
