Gers are ahead, but race is still on

by John Hartson , 09 May 2009

I think Walter Smith will be congratulating his players on their victory but I also think he will be telling them there’s a long way to go before they can clinch the title.

I think teams have shown in the past that they can take points off the Old Firm but Rangers’ destiny is in their hands now, while Celtic will be relying on a Rangers mistake looking to win their games and hope they slip up.

But they really grabbed it Rangers and they defended for their lives in the second half, and on the day Kris Boyd had the best chance when he went one-on-one and they were 1-0 up at half time.

You can probably say that despite Celtic having a lot of possession they never really opened Rangers up and never had anything clear-cut. But on the day Rangers probably deserved it.

I think the penalty claim would have been soft. I think as Scott Booth said in the commentary that they have been given before, but if it was at Celtic Park you might get it, but because it’s here the referee may not want to give it.

But to say it’s a stonewall penalty, I don’t think so, but I have seen them given before.

John Hartson was speaking as a studio guest during Setanta Sports live coverage from Ibrox.
