WATCH LIVE & ON-DEMAND

The SPL is falling further behind

by Mark Hateley , 23 October 2008

There is a lot of money being bandied about in the top league, the best league in the world and The Premier League speaks for itself with the quality knocking around now.

All the top players want to play in that league and all the money is there so you know top dollar gets top players and top quality. There's no greater way of seeing that than the other night and the difference between Manchester United and Celtic.

It's all down to money in my eyes. You get what you pay for.

Fortunately for us, we've got Setanta Sports sponsoring The SPL but the difference in the money that's paid out between the two leagues is a million miles apart.

Such is the quality of the two different teams, it was as clear as the nose on your face, watching the game, that the void is becoming larger and larger.

It's not just clubs in Scotland but in Europe now as I think probably on four or five teams can win the Champions League and, in that, I'd put three English teams there. That speaks for itself.

It's been evident with Rangers not qualifying for Europe and Aberdeen were trying to establish themselves in the Uefa Cup. The standard is there for everyone to see and teams live and die by results.

Rangers may have got to the Uefa Cup final last year but they were very fortunate to get there and they came up against a Zenit St Petersburg side who were, individually, far better all round and that's when the luck runs out.

Definitely for me, smaller nations like Holland, who have not got a lot of sponsorship, are in the same boat. The days of Ajax getting to the final of the Champions League and Uefa Cup have long gone.
