If ever you needed confirmation that football fans are hard to please, take a trip to Molineux.
Wolves were top of The Championship from the end of October until the bitter death last season but during their mid-campaign wobble, there were more than a few whisperings of wanting to get Mick McCarthy out. Seriously.
A week ago and grumbles started again. A return to The Promised Land, The Land of Milk and Honey (The Premier League to the rest of us) is on the horizon but still those Wolves followers found reason for disgruntlement. The reason the natives were getting restless this time? Birmingham had made two signings and Wolves none.
They needn’t panic. The trio of chairman Steve Morgan, chief executive Jez Moxey and manager McCarthy – or the three Ms – have already given every indication that this summer is the real deal.
The club’s last and only previous foray into The Premier League was nothing short of a disaster – a disaster that looked on the cards from the moment the name Oleg Luzhny was hailed as a significant signing.
However, this time is different. Thus far only Nenad Milijas (work permit pending) and Marcus Hahnemann have arrived at Molineux to complement McCarthy’s existing squad. But this is exactly the point – the three Ms’ most notable work all summer has already been done.
On Saturday it was announced that Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had followed both Karl Henry and Kevin Foley in agreeing a new long-term contract with Wolves. This is nothing to be sniffed at.
Mere speculation it might be but this is a player who has been linked with Everton time and time again and, as we all know, rarely is there smoke without fire. Whether rival suitors have been having a look or not, Ebanks-Blake’s willingness to commit his future regardless is a sign of things to come in the old gold quarters of the black country.
There is no doubting that Wolves still need an awful lot of strengthening....an unflappable centre back to partner either Richard Stearman or Christophe Berra and a striker of real repute are absolute musts.
In an ideal world, a starting left back and left midfielder would come in to allow the like of George Elokobi and Matt Jarvis to impact from the bench and more experienced cover for the likes of Henry in midfield would also be acquired.
But Wolves need to believe in what they’ve got. Wayne Hennessey, Foley, Stearman, Michael Kightly, Henry, Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake and even the much-maligned Andy Keogh can all make the step up. No doubt some of them will fail to do so but they won last season’s Championship at a canter for a reason.
Just you watch.
