Cavanagh talks up Tyrone talent

by Oli Skehan , 16 September 2011

Former Footballer of the Year Sean Cavanagh is confident that there is enough young talent coming through in Tyrone to keep the county at football's top table for many years to come.

Tyrone exited this year's All-Ireland SFC at the quarter-final stage when they were put to the sword by old foes Dublin but prior to that Red Hand boss Mickey Harte had blooded many youngsters in the Allianz Football League and the provincial championship and Cavanagh believes that this will benefit the Ulster kingpins in the long-term.

"There is a massive amount of talent in Tyrone and there is an awful lot of guys who are just waiting on their chance," the man from Moy said.

"Peter Harte made the breakthrough this year and he has been a revelation for us. Kyle Coney showed in the couple of championship games he got that he is capable of being one of the best players in Ireland on his day.

"Guys like Niall McKenna, Mattie Donnelly, Ronan O'Neill - players of that calibre are capable of making the step-up. People come out with these big statements that there isn't enough talent. I think anyone who knows anything about Tyrone club football or minors or U21s would answer differently.

"Tyrone is probably blessed with one of the best production lines of footballers anywhere in Ireland. The natural changing of the guard will help bring on some of those players."
