Trapattoni proud of qualification

by Michelle Fortune , 16 November 2011

Giovanni Trapattoni insists the Republic of Ireland can make a big impact at next summer's European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine.

There were emotional scenes at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night as Ireland booked their place in Euro 2012 with a 1-1 draw against Estonia for a 5-1 victory on aggregate.

It is the Republic of Ireland's first appearance in the European Championships since 1988 while it is ten years since they qualified for the finals of a major tournament.

Having watched his team book their place in the December 2 draw, Trapattoni immediately turned his attentions to next summer and warned that the Boys in Green will take a lot of beating.

"I think never say never. I hope only we have no injuries in this campaign and no suspensions," he said.

"It's good that we have new options to come in, but it's important that we have the basis of our first team available.

"Why not? Now we have discovered Jon Walters, we have discovered also Simon Cox, and we also have Robbie Keane and Shane Long to come back, and also our wingers.

"With this group, why not? It's not a dream. We need 100 per cent commitment, but football is about scoring goals."

Ireland had all but sealed their passage to the finals when they defeated Estonia 4-0 in Tallinn on Friday but they refused to take anything for granted and went out looking for the victory at the Aviva Stadium.

Reflecting on the entire qualification campaign, Trapattoni was quick to praise the mental strength of his side following their heartbreaking defeat to France in the play-offs for the 2010 World Cup.

"I am very, very proud for many reasons. We came here with an important objective," the Italian added.

"We have started the last campaign in a difficult group with Italy and then we had France, and we could have achieved qualification.

"But we started again and we have discovered new important options in terms of players. They have shown how important they have been for us.

"We have improved our quality, like against Russia. We have started again with new mentality and the players believe in our system."
