Versatile Mayo footballer Trevor Mortimer has confirmed that he is retiring from inter-county football due to work commitments.

The 31-year old Shrule-Glencorrib clubman, the older brother of county marksman Conor, has said that work commitments in Kenya mean that he will be unavailable for selection for James Horan's side who face a Allianz Football League showdown with Cork in Croke Park on Sunday.

Mortimer, a former Mayo captain, has played no part in this year's national league campaign and informed the manager of his decision to retire during a recent visit home.

He made his Mayo debut in 2000 and played in the 2004 All-Ireland final against Kerry. He was a substitute for the 2006 All-Ireland Final, also against the Kingdom. He won a league medal in 2001 when Mayo beat Galway in the decider.

Trevor was a great servant for Mayo football and we wish him well,” Horan said upon hearing the news.

"We are fortunate that we have a number of good young players coming through, but Trevor was a top-class player and he has left some big boots to fill."
