Setanta Sports Ireland have confirmed that they have secured the exclusive rights to show the Republic of Ireland’s friendly against Serbia on August 15th.
After a disappointing Euro 2012 campaign, the upcoming international friendlies have become vital before the start of qualification for the World Cup Brazil 2014.
The game against Serbia is the last scheduled friendly before Giovanni Trapattoni’s men take on Kazakhstan in the opening game of qualification in September.
Trapattoni has faced criticism for his strict adherence to the same personal and formation throughout a disastrous European Championship campaign and it is hoped this friendly will provide him with an opportunity to blood new players.
Wes Hoolahan, Anthony Stokes, and James McLean will all be hoping to be involved in the squad and with question marks still surrounding the futures of established stars, Shay Given, Robbie Keane and Richard Dunne it is sure to be an interesting game for all Irish supporters.
Brian Quinn, Marketing Director of Setanta Sports, commented, “We are delighted to announce that Irish fans will be able to see the team’s final friendly before the qualification process kicks off. It will be interesting to see what changes are going to be made heading into the next tournament.
“The timing is good for our viewers as the first of our 33 3pm Premier League games is on August 18th when West Brom take on Liverpool.”
Setanta recently announced a strong line-up of Premier League fixtures including 8 Liverpool and Manchester United games in their first thirteen fixtures.
And they have also scheduled a number of pre-season matches including 5 Manchester City games, Celtic v Ajax on July 21st and FK Ekranas v Shamrock Rovers in the crucial second leg of their Champions League qualifier on July 24th.
